How Pregnancy Indigestion Led to a Slanted Bed at Bobby’s House

Bobby said he doesn’t pretend to understand the pregnant body, but his wife is very pregnant and dealing with severe indigestion.

According to doctors and her own research, indigestion can be common during pregnancy, and one factor can be that the baby has a lot of hair. To help manage the indigestion, she has been advised to sleep sitting up or at an incline. Because of that, a large wedge was added on top of their bed to keep it permanently slanted. Since the wedge covers the entire mattress, Bobby also has to sleep at an angle. He said it feels like sitting in an airplane seat or sleeping in a hospital bed that is always elevated. Cutting the wedge in half was not an option because of how it fits on the bed and how complicated it would make the bedding.

Bobby tried sleeping on the slanted bed for two nights. The first night he slept poorly. The second night he fell asleep but woke up feeling like he was leaning forward and couldn’t stay comfortable, so he quietly went upstairs to sleep. He explained that getting out of bed without waking his wife is a careful process, especially since he already wakes up very early for work. He moves slowly under the covers to avoid popping joints loudly, lifts the covers without pulling them, slides out of bed, and keeps clothes outside the door so he doesn’t have to open drawers. He even lubricates the door regularly so it doesn’t make noise.

He said he is especially careful not to wake her now given she is pregnant and already has trouble sleeping. Her heart rate is often elevated at night, which they track with wearable rings, making it harder for her to sleep while her body is creating another human.
